A selkie mid-transformation. Selkies are women of the ocean from Scottish, Icelandic and Scandinavian folklore. They are capable of transforming from human form into a seal. Many tales tell of them slipping off their seal skins to bask on rocks in the sun. If a man is able to steal her skin while she sleeps, she is forced to become his wife and live on land. But, if the selkie finds her skin again, she transforms back into her true form and can returns to the sea, free. The stories of selkies are often viewed as symbols of women fighting for freedom and equality, searching for their metaphorical skin.
